The early chapters include his views of Continental railroading, sometimes from rather unusual vantage points, while serving with U. S. occupation forces in Italy. Back home as a civilian, the author enrolled as an engineering student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Several chapters are devoted to his observations of the local railroad operations during his student years. Other locations in the Southeast are also covered, as well as a circle tour of the American West. The author writes, “If it ran on rails, I took notice of it”, This interest included such major Southeastern trunk lines as the Southern and the Louisville & Nashville, regional carriers such as the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis, the Clinchfield, and the Tennessee Central, and special attention to the archetypical short line known as the Smoky Mountain Railroad. His interests also included electric interurban and street railways, a vanishing breed in the late 1940s. One complete chapter and a number of photographs are devoted to this subject. His most intense interest, however, was in the steam locomotive. Therefore, he watched regretfully in the postwar years as diesels toppled one steam bastion after another – with a few notable exceptions. A major steam loyalist, of course, was the Norfolk & Western, which continued to draw the author’s special attention. In fact, before his senior year was completed at the University of Tennessee in 1949, he had received and had accepted an offer of employment from that company. In short, Volume 2 is a first-person account of the development of a railway enthusiast’s youthful avocation into an intended vocation, interwoven with items of the industry’s history. It includes 295 black-and-white photographs of steam, electric, and diesel operations, mostly from the author’s own collect All pictures are of the actual item.
