Publisher: Original purple cloth, titles to spine gilt, key monogram to spine, title and with key monogram to spine, title and floral decoration to sides all designed by Aubrey Beardsley. With the publisher’s 8pp. of ads for the Keynotes Series and 16 pp. catalogue (dated 1895). Octavo. key monogram to spine, title and floral decoration to sides in white, all designed by Aubrey Beardsley, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. 163 pages of text with 164 page blank. Condition: Original purple cloth that is faded and mottled with one inch of badly faded strip at top but still predominatly purple. Back board is 95% still purple. Spine is sun faded with top and bottom chips to cloth at top and bottom of spine. The spine gilt has the top coming loose. Title and top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. No previous owner insciptions or bookplate. The text is clean with no tears and very mild foxing to top. Queen’s Quorum 19 says “In 1895 M. P. Shiel, that comparatively unsung genius of the weird and the fantastic, had his first book published. The three short stories in PRINCE ZALESKI are tales out of the past . Prince Zaleski, an exiled Russian nobleman, inhabits a half-ruined abbey in Wales, where he spends most of his time smoking cannabis and opium, reading from his library of medieval books, or admiring his collection of rare curios dating from ancient antiquity. His retirement from the world is occasionally interrupted by his friend Shiel, who comes to seek Zaleski’s help in solving mysteries that have baffled the greatest minds in Britain. The three stories are; THE RACE OF ORVEN, In this story Zaleski must unravel a case involving a burglary, a murder, a floating phantasm, and three severed fingers. THE STONE OF THE EDMUNDSBURY MONKS, In “this story the prince races against time to solve the mystery of a jewel from the Crusades that may cause a man’s death. THE S. S. In this story an inexplicable wave of thousands of apparent suicides puts Zaleski to the ultimate test and leads to a deeply disturbing conclusion. Originally appearing in 1895 as the seventh entry in John Lane’s provocative Keynotes series The Keynotes Series, comprising 33 novels and short story collections, was published in a distinctive format, featuring Aubrey Beardsley’s cover designs and embellishments, by John Lane between 1893 and 1897. Prince Zaleski incorporated two of the popular trends in 1890s literature: Decadence and detective stories. Influenced by Poe, Huysmans, and Wilde, Shiel’s Decadent detective remains one of the most intriguing creations of fin de siècle British fiction. A rare and uncommon title and much sought.
