Combination Antenna Mast & Vertical Antenna AB-86/GRA-4, 40 Ft for Wire Antennas Complete Set – Never Used”MX-1116/GRA-4” is only the nomenclature for the end plates that are used to hold the rest of the mast parts when in transport. The AB-86/GRA-4 is an Antenna Base # 86 from the Ground Radio Assembly #4. Its packed length of 38 inches fit between the wheel wells of a Radio Jeep. That makes it fit in the trunk of most compact cars but not sub compact cars. It includes a base insulator and top adapter to use it as a vertical antenna. When the MS-116A whip antenna is screwed into the top adapter, the additional 15 feet of whip antenna gives it a height of 55 feet above the insulator. At its 40 foot height, it supports a halyard for supporting wire antennas. Very popular with Ham Radio Operators and Preppers!It can be used for high frequency short and medium wave amateur radio as it is. The kit comes with a base insulator that has a clamp for connecting the center conductor of a coaxial cable using a coax to open wire adapter. The shield connecting wire would be connected to a counterpoise CP-12 or CP-13. A remote automatic antenna coupler makes tuning the mast to the proper frequency much easier. The counterpoise is 4 wires on a real that connect to the radio ground. Some add a terminal to the lower part of the base section for connecting the shield conductor lead and the counter poise which are supposed to be at ground potential anyway. When the 4 wires are spread out to their ends and kept slightly above the ground as an elevated counterpoise it markedly improves the performance of the antenna. There is an adapter in the kit that allows you to connect a set of whip antenna parts which extend the total height of the mast to 55 feet. You can search for those using the nomenclature “MS-116 antenna” That antenna consists of 3 MS-116 mast sections, 1 MS-117 sections, and one MS-118 section which screw together to form a 15 foot whip antenna.
