Incredible Vintage Table Cutlery Serving Set (5 Pieces) from Solingen, Germany. Stainless Steel with Carved Stag Bone or Stag Horn Handles. Each handle has an intricate hunting figure (animal) carved into it, like a bas-relief. The two pieces with wide blades (knife and the cleaver) also have very elaborate German scenes affixed or carved into or appliqued or painted onto (Damascene?) the steel blades in green, red, beige and blue. I cannot believe the fine work and detail on these pieces. 1. Cleaver: 10.25 inches long. Blade is 5.5 inches long. Widest part of blade is 2.75 inches. Hole at end of blade if you want to hang it up. Piece is heavy in the hand. On one side of the blade is the intricate scene of dogs pursuing a boar–I have no idea how that scene got transferred or painted or affixed to the blade. The reverse side of the stainless steel blade is blank. The handle is slightly curved stag horn with a 3-inch running boar. Amazing detail. 2. Carving knife: 12.25 inches long with a 7.75-inch blade. Another of those intricate pictures affixed to one side of the blade: A stag in a forest in beige, green, brown and red. At bottom of this picture : GES.GESCH Stainless Steel (Arty Symbol) Solingen Germany. Stag horn carved handle has a 2.5-inch running African gazelle with a curved horn going back almost to the hindquarters. 3. Two-tined Fork is 11 inches long. It has the word ?”ROSTFRE”? or something like that where the two tines come together. Again the stag horn handle with a 2.25-inch running African gazelle with the sweep-back horns that almost touch the hindquarters. This piece too is heavy in the hand. 4. Sharpening Steel is 12 inches long. On shank: Hard Chrome Plated Solingen Germany. Stag horn handle has a carved sheep or dog with floppy ears. 5. The Shears are heavy-duty with a strong spring. It is 11 inches long and has a “catch” to hold it closed when not in use. Both stag horn handles have twin images of a flying gamebird; they might be geese but the beaks look like those of a heron or some other wading bird. (sorry I can’t do better with these identifications.) Each flying bird is about 2 inches long. There is a little rust or pitting on the blades of the shear and the back of the cleaver. I don’t dare risk cleaning them up. I think it will come off all right if you know what you are doing. Make me an offer on this unusual set. I’ll mail these 5 pieces, well-wrapped and padded, to anywhere in the USA for $16.75 via USPS Priority Medium Box. This will give us tracking and some insurance.
