A rustic old 8 1/2″ wide antique china calendar plate from BISMARK Wyoming … ? Washington … ? Wisconsin … ? North Dakota … ? As you can see from the close up picture it is unclear as what state this plate is from. It looks like “Bismark, Wy”, but there is no Bismark, Wyoming?! So take a close look the advertising on this plate, where do you think it is from? Also, note that BISMARK is spelled without a ‘C’, as in BISMARCK, like Bismarck, North Dakota. Anyway, the plate is full of beautiful designs covering the plate, including Terns/Swallows flying in the center. Around the edges of the plate are the 12 calendar months for the year 1909. Plate reads: “Compliments of / W. M. Brooks, / Bismark Wy.” Backside of plate reads: “DRESDEN / CHINA”. Condition: This plate is in nice clean condition. It has a long thin no-harm sliver missing from center ring on bottom, and it also has some wear, mainly edge wear and some glaze crackling/crazing from age. In essence, this plate is in nice old rustic condition and really has the look of a century + old plate. Age: A TRUE ANTIQUE plate dated 1909. A very unique plate with the mystery of where it is actually from. These old calendar plates were made to celebrate the opening of a store, or commemorate the existence of the business, or given out to loyal customer’s. Note that the backside has the “Dresden China” maker’s mark, that is one of the marks that antique dealer’s look for on these old pieces of souvenir china as that is the mark that authenticates this piece as being truly antique. Old calendar plates like this are always popular as 1) they always have advertising on them, 2) have colorful scenes, pictures, designs, logos on them, 3) are easy to date as they have the date right on them. The plate also mentions, W.M. Brooks, this would of been the person/company that had this old plate custom made to advertise the business. If you looked into an old Polk City Directory from whatever place this plate was from, you could find out who W. M. Brooks was, what their business was, and, in the process, document W.M. Brooks place in history. Yet until this plate can be positively identified as being from a certain state, well its just a mystery plate. It could be from an old town named Bismark that turned into a ghost town in an old western state like Wyoming. If anyone knows, I am all ears.
