Red “PHILADELPHIA DESPATCH POST 1 P.M.” 28mm red handstamp struck on the obverse of a 3-page letter datelined “State Lunatic Hospital, Worcester May 26 1842” and “Boston, June 5, 1843” and apparently hand-carried into Philadelphia where it was tendered to the Philadelphia Despatch Post for delivery. There is also a solid “3” to denote the Philadelphia Despatch Post’s rate, apparently collect. The letter is address to “Thos. P. Kirkland, M. D., Philadelphia.” Dr. Kirkland docketed the item “answered 6/9/43” on the obverse. There is a pencil “Penn Hospital 8th & Pine” lightly written at the top – perhaps the delivery clerk coordinator wrote this. The letter is actually two letters from physicians at the Lunatic Hospital, discussing operations of the hospital in great detail. The content is so sensitive that Dr. Kirkland obscured the name of the patient and the two doctors. The first letter is an introduction letter. According to the American Stampless Cover Catalog, the Philadelphia Despatch Post was used by Robertson & Company –one of the predecessors of Blood’s Penny Post. According to a prior owner of this item, the Philadelphia Despatch Post was the first local post within the city limits of Philadelphia and was started by Robertson & Company in December 1842 and was purchased by D. O. Blood & Company on July 7, 1845. According to the prior owner, the Philadelphia Despatch Post would have charged a 3¢ fee to the sender for taking it to the post office.
