On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print “Thrang Crag Slate Quarry, Great Langdale , Westmorland. (the property of Lord Lowther).”, now Cumbria. DATE PRINTED: 1834, dated on the print.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 16 x 11.5 cm (6.25 x 4.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Alexander Le Petit (1804?-1896) from an original study by Thomas Allom. Thomas Allom (13 March 1804 – 21 October 1872) was an English architect, artist, and topographical illustrator. He was a founding member of what became the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He designed many buildings in London, including the Church of St Peter’s and parts of the elegant Ladbroke Estate in Notting Hill. He also worked with Sir Charles Barry on numerous projects, most notably the Houses of Parliament, and is also known for his numerous topographical works, such as Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, published in 1838, and China Illustrated, published in 1845PROVENANCE: This print was published in “Westmoreland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland : illustrated from original drawings by Thomas Allom, George Pickering, etc with descriptions by T. Rose “, 1832-35.TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Great Langdale and Elterwater were centres of the Lakeland slate industry. Two slate workings, Elterwater Quarry and Spout Cragg Quarry have been more or less continually working using modern methods.
